Date & Time

Gina Porter, Professor at Department of Anthropology, Durham University, Durham, United Kingdom

Participatory Action Research (PAR) is a powerful method for bringing together the technical, practical, local and other kinds of knowledge crucial to making good transport planning decisions, and ensuring uptake among key stakeholders. In this workshop, two pioneers in applying these methods in transport will introduce several successful PAR approaches that have brought significant progress in Latin America (Chile) and Africa (Tunis, Abuja, Cape Town). The participants will have a chance to discuss the application of PAR and other creative ways that can help get more out of other traditional research and study methods.

In this workshop participants will:

  • Understand PAR as a general strategy for mobilizing knowledge, wills and creativity, for more successful and inclusive research outcomes.

  • Discuss with fellow peers application and adaptability of PAR to different urban and research challenges.
